Why This Matters
Getting into a lab is an achievement. But what happens next determines whether research becomes a transformative experience or just a line on your resume.
Many students spend years in research doing menial tasks, never progressing to meaningful contribution. They wash dishes, enter data, and shadow others without ever owning a project. When application time comes, they struggle to explain what they actually did.

The First 60 Days: Proving Yourself
Week 1-2: Learn the Basics
- Learn names of everyone in the lab (and remember them)
- Understand the lab's overall research focus and current projects
- Master basic protocols and safety procedures
- Figure out lab logistics
- Show up on time, every time
Week 3-4: Demonstrate Reliability
- Complete assigned work ahead of deadlines
- Double-check your work before submitting it
- When you make mistakes (you will), own them immediately
- Ask questions when genuinely confused, but try to find answers yourself first
- Volunteer for unglamorous tasks without being asked
Week 5-8: Show Initiative
- Read papers relevant to your project
- Come to meetings with questions about the research, not just logistics
- Identify small ways to improve lab processes or organization
- Start suggesting rather than just asking
- Request feedback on your performance

The Traits That Get You Promoted
- Reliability — Nothing matters more.
- Intellectual Curiosity — Read about your project. Ask why, not just how.
- Problem-Solving Orientation — Don't just report problems. Suggest solutions.
- Low Maintenance — Don't require constant supervision.
- Good Communication — Keep your mentor informed.
- Ownership — Treat the project like it's yours.

Requesting Your Own Project
After 2-4 months of proving yourself:
The Setup: Request a dedicated meeting, not a hallway chat. Come prepared.
The Script: "I've really enjoyed learning about [lab's work] over the past few months, and I feel like I have a solid handle on [techniques you've learned]. I'm wondering if there might be a small project I could take more ownership of. I'm not looking for something that takes resources away from others; I'm thinking more about a sub-question within an existing project or a preliminary experiment that could inform future work. What do you think might be possible?"
Why This Works:
- You've demonstrated competence first
- You're showing initiative without being presumptuous
- You're explicitly acknowledging resource constraints
- You're asking for guidance rather than demanding opportunity
Be Prepared for "Not Yet": Ask what you'd need to demonstrate to be ready.

Making Progress on Your Project
- Set Regular Check-Ins — Weekly/biweekly meetings with written updates.
- Keep a Detailed Lab Notebook — Document everything.
- Learn to Troubleshoot — Experiments fail. Develop hypotheses about why.
- Read Relevant Literature — Helps interpret results and generate ideas.
- Think Ahead — "If this works, what next? If it fails, what's our backup?"

The Behaviors That Keep You Stuck
- Passivity — Waiting to be told what to do.
- Excuses — Blaming external factors.
- Complaining — Research is frustrating; everyone knows.
- Invisibility — Physically present but mentally absent.
- Entitlement — Expecting authorship without earning it.

Building Relationships in the Lab
- Graduate Students and Postdocs — Often have more time than faculty. Learn techniques from them.
- Other Undergraduates — Peer relationships make work more enjoyable.
- Lab Manager/Technicians — Keep the lab running. Be respectful and grateful.

Documentation for Future Applications
Keep a Running List of:
- Techniques you've learned
- Experiments conducted
- Results generated (even negative)
- Contributions to others' projects
- Data analyzed
- Papers read
Track Your Hours — Simple log.
Save Evidence of Contribution — Screenshots of data, drafts written, posters created.
Collect Contact Information — For everyone who supervises or works closely with you.

Timeline Expectations
- Months 1-3: Learning techniques, basic tasks, understanding the lab's work
- Months 4-8: More independent work, possibly starting your own small project
