Why This Matters
Research without output is just a hobby. Medical schools want to see that your research led somewhere: a publication, a presentation, a thesis, or acceptance to a competitive program.
This isn't about padding your resume. These outputs demonstrate that you completed something meaningful, that others valued your contribution enough to include you, and that you can see a project through to conclusion.

Understanding Authorship
How Authorship Decisions Get Made
Each lab and field has different norms, but generally:
- First author: Did the most work, usually designed and executed main experiments, wrote first draft
- Last author: Usually the principal investigator (PI) who led the project
- Middle authors: Contributed meaningfully but less than first author
Undergraduates typically land in middle author positions, though first authorship is possible with substantial contribution.
What Qualifies as Authorship
According to ICMJE guidelines, authors should have:
- Substantial contribution to conception/design OR acquisition/analysis of data
- Involvement in drafting or critically revising the manuscript
- Final approval of the version to be published
- Agreement to be accountable for the work
Washing dishes, entering data, or being present doesn't qualify. You need intellectual contribution.
What Gets You Acknowledgment Instead — Contributions that don't rise to authorship typically get acknowledged in a footnote. Still worth something.

Positioning Yourself for Authorship
- Contribute to a Publishable Project — Ask: "What's the plan for this project?"
- Take on Writing Tasks — Methods sections, figures, references.
- Generate Meaningful Data — If your experiments appear in the final paper, strong authorship claim.
- Analyze and Interpret — Beyond just collection.
- Have the Conversation Early — Ask: "If this leads to publication, how would authorship typically be determined?"

Realistic Expectations
Highly Likely with 1-2 Years of Work:
- Poster presentation at undergraduate symposium
- Middle authorship on a paper (if timing works out)
- Acknowledgment on a paper
- Strong letter of recommendation
Possible with Exceptional Contribution:
- First or co-first authorship
- Presentation at a national conference
- Honors thesis based on research
Unlikely for Most Undergraduates:
- First author publication in a top-tier journal
- Multiple publications
Publications can take 1-3 years from project start. You can list as "manuscript in preparation" or "submitted."

Presentations: A More Achievable Goal
- Undergraduate Research Symposiums — Nearly every university hosts these.
- Regional Conferences — Academic society regional meetings with student poster sessions.
- National Conferences — Sometimes have undergraduate poster sessions or travel awards.
How to Make It Happen:
- Ask your mentor about appropriate venues
- Identify submission deadlines (2-4 months before conference)
- Draft abstract; have mentor review
- Create poster with mentor guidance
- Practice presentation
Presenting forces synthesis and articulation—valuable for interviews.

Summer Research Programs
Competitive summer programs demonstrate outside evaluators found you promising:
- NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) — Highly competitive.
- Amgen Scholars — Prestigious; multiple institutions.
- Leadership Alliance / SROP — Strong support for underrepresented backgrounds.
- REU Programs — NSF-funded across many institutions.
- Institution-Specific Programs — Many universities accept students from other schools.

- Your mentor's knowledge
Application Tips:
- Apply broadly (5-10 programs)
- Start early (Jan-Feb deadlines for summer)
- Get strong faculty letters
- Write compelling personal statements

Creating Output Even Without Publication
- Honors Thesis — Substantial, tangible output you control.
- Independent Study Credit — Often requires final paper or presentation.
- Departmental Awards — Often under-competed.
- Internal Lab Presentations — Lab meetings, departmental seminars.
- Research Summary Documents — Polished summary for your records.

Describing Research on Your Application
In the Activities Section (700 characters):
Example: "Investigated role of microglial activation in Alzheimer's disease pathology. Independently conducted immunohistochemistry on mouse brain tissue, quantified microglial density using ImageJ analysis, and maintained transgenic mouse colony. Generated data contributing to manuscript currently in preparation. Presented findings at university research symposium."
In Interviews: Be prepared to explain to a non-expert. Practice the 2-minute and 30-second versions.
If Asked "What Did You Contribute?": "I was responsible for X and Y. I performed the experiments that generated Figure 3 in our paper. I also helped troubleshoot the protocol when we were getting inconsistent results."
