Why This Matters

When most students think "research," they picture pipettes, cell cultures, and late nights in a laboratory. But this is a narrow view.

Medical schools value all forms of systematic inquiry: clinical research, public health studies, health policy analysis, quality improvement projects, and more. If wet lab work doesn't excite you, that's not a problem. It's an opportunity to find research that aligns with your genuine interests.

Why Alternative Research Paths Work

Medical schools want evidence that you can:

  • Ask meaningful questions
  • Design systematic approaches to answering them
  • Analyze information critically
  • Draw evidence-based conclusions
  • Contribute to the broader body of knowledge

You can demonstrate all of these through research that never involves a microscope. In fact, clinical and public health research often connects more directly to patient care than basic science does.

Clinical Research

Studies conducted with human participants or human data.

Types of Clinical Research:

  • Retrospective Chart Reviews — Analyzing existing patient records.
  • Prospective Cohort Studies — Following patients over time.
  • Clinical Trials — Testing new treatments. Undergrads usually assist with recruitment, data collection, regulatory compliance.
  • Case Studies / Case Series — Detailed analysis of unusual cases.

How to Find:

  • Contact physicians you've shadowed about research involvement
  • Look for "Clinical Research Coordinator" postings
  • Check with your university's medical school or affiliated hospitals
  • Search faculty directories for physicians with research interests

Advantages:

  • Direct connection to patient care
  • Easier to explain to non-scientists
  • May involve patient interaction
  • Faster publication timelines than basic science

Focuses on population health, disease prevention, and health systems.

QI projects may not lead to traditional publication but can result in presentations, internal reports, or implementation of new practices.

  • Prepare to Explain — Practice explaining value and rigor to non-experts.

  • Do I prefer working with data or with my hands?
  • Am I more interested in individual patients or population health?
  • Do I care more about discovery or implementation?
  • Am I drawn to biological mechanisms or social determinants?
  • Do I enjoy writing and analysis or experiments and observation?

The best research experience genuinely engages you.
