The MCAT covers a vast amount of content. Reviewing everything equally would take forever and isn't necessary.

Some topics appear frequently. Others appear rarely. Smart preparation focuses effort where it matters most.

The 80/20 Principle Applied to the MCAT

Certain topics and skills generate disproportionate score gains. These fall into two categories:

  • High-frequency topics. Concepts that appear repeatedly across many exams.
  • Personal weak spots. Topics you consistently miss.

Optimal preparation addresses both.

High-Yield Topics by Section

Chem/Phys High-Yield Areas:

  • Amino acid structure and properties. Structures, charges at different pH, all 20.
  • Acid-base chemistry. Henderson-Hasselbalch, buffers, titrations, pKa.
  • Enzyme kinetics. Michaelis-Menten, inhibition, Lineweaver-Burk.
  • Thermodynamics. Gibbs, enthalpy, entropy, biological applications.
  • Electrochemistry. Galvanic and electrolytic cells.
  • Optics and light. Mirrors, lenses, refraction.
  • Fluids and circulation. Bernoulli, continuity, pressure.

Bio/Biochem High-Yield Areas:

  • Molecular biology. Central dogma and everything around it.
  • Metabolism. Glycolysis, TCA, oxidative phosphorylation, gluconeogenesis, fatty acid metabolism.
  • Cell biology. Organelles, membrane transport, signaling, receptor types.
  • Genetics. Mendelian, linkage, Hardy-Weinberg, disorders.
  • Endocrine system. Hormones, mechanisms, feedback loops.
  • Nervous system. Neurons, action potentials, neurotransmitters.
  • Immune system. Innate vs. adaptive, cell types, antibodies.

Psych/Soc High-Yield Areas:

  • Psychological theories of learning. Classical, operant, observational.
  • Memory. Types, encoding, retrieval, forgetting.
  • Social psychology. Attribution, attitudes, conformity, obedience, group dynamics.
  • Identity development. Erikson, Kohlberg.
  • Social inequality. SES, discrimination, healthcare disparities.
  • Research methods. Study types, variables, validity, reliability.

Identifying Your Personal Weak Spots

  • Review practice test results. Look for patterns across tests.
  • Analyze error types. Content gap, passage misunderstanding, calculation error, time?
  • Test yourself before reviewing. Your performance reveals what you actually need.
  • Be honest about forgotten material.

Structuring Your Content Review

  • First pass: Build the framework. Content review books or videos. Focus on understanding.
  • Second pass: Active recall and practice. Flashcards (Anki) for memorization. Practice problems to apply.
